The Mare favela is located close to Rio De Janeiro airport and is known for wars relating to drugs and drug trafficking. The Brazil government has been working hard to make Rio De Janeiro a safe place for visitors to ensure the impending football world cup is a resounding success. The military moved into the favela just before dawn on 30th March. They seized a huge number of weapons but by the afternoon clashes were taking place. Many people were injured and a teenage boy was killed. Travellers are advised to not visit favelas or take part in any favela ‘tours’ whilst visiting Rio De Janeiro. Whilst attacks on tourists are unlikely, tourists may get caught in crossfire.
