A deadly avalanche has occurred just above Everest base camp. So far 16 sherpas have been confirmed dead and a number of travellers have been reported injured.
The sherpas were travelling up an area known as the “popcorn field” to secure ropes and prepare the route before climbers began their ascent later that day. The deaths have raised concerns about the safety and wellbeing of sherpas and has instigated a walk out of many sherpas from the region. Travellers to this area of Nepal should check with their tour company that treks are still taking place prior to travel. Numerous Everest expeditions have been abandoned in respect of the sherpa deaths, though at present there are no reports of other trek routes being affected though this is subject to change.
