Destination Information for Paraguay

The landlocked South American country of Paraguay is bordered by Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia. It makes a great choice of destination for travellers who want an authentic adventure in South America, without the influence of a large tourist industry. The diverse landscape encompasses swampland, rainforest and dry savanna wilderness in the Gran Chaco regions on the Northwest of the country.

Paraguay’s capital, Asunción, is on the bank of the Paraguay River, while other busy cities, Ciudad del Este and Encarnación, lie along the border with Argentina. While rich in natural resources, including the world’s largest drinking water reservoir and The Itaipú Dam, the biggest hydroelectric producer, Paraguay is one of the poorest countries in South America.

Additional Health Risks Information for Paraguay

Visitors to Paraguay should play close attention to their personal safety and security at all times. Petty crime and pickpocketing is common in crowded tourist areas and public places such as markets, so be vigilant about your personal possessions avoid travelling alone, particularly after dark. If you are hiking or exploring remote areas, register your details with park authorities and make sure someone knows where you’re going, when you plan to be back and that you have a means of summoning help if necessary.

Driving standards in Paraguay are poor. If you hire a car, make sure you have the necessary insurance. If you’re using a taxi, book in advance with a reputable firm, and do not hail a taxi on the street. If you’re planning to swim in the many rivers, be aware of strong currents. The River Paraguay around Asunción is highly polluted, so avoid swimming or bathing here. There are many boat trips on the main rivers, however health and safety standards are not the same as in the UK, so exercise caution at all times.

UK health authorities have classified Paraguay as having a risk of Zika virus transmission. Take suitable precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitos for the duration of your stay, due to the risk of Zika and other illnesses including Dengue Fever and Chikungunya. During the rainy season, flooding can occur, including in some areas of Asunción and neighbouring cities, in which the worst affected residents have been evacuated
