There have been extensive demonstrations in Hong Kong. The uprising occurred when China specified that it was to vet candidates for the 2017 elections and protesters argue that Hong Kong should be independent. Demonstrations are taking place in Admiralty district around the government buildings and in other parts of the city including Causeway Bay, Mongkok, Central and Tsim Sha Tsui. There have been many disruptions to public transport services so visitors should allow extra time for travel and avoid any demonstrations. Police have used tear gas to keep protesters under control and these demonstrations have the potential to lead to violent episodes. Travellers should avoid demonstrations at all costs.
